Series Feature: Bhutan: The Journey Within

Recharge your fitness and step into Bhutan with iFIT Trainer Casey Gilbert and iFIT Guide Kenton Cool. Hike and jog to better health and peace of mind in Bhutan: The Journey Within. This new iFIT series combines majestic landscapes nestled amidst the Himalayas, rich culture, and a deep sense of calm thanks to Gross National Happiness, the legislative philosophy that makes Bhutan a haven where well-being and spiritual harmony reign supreme. We also got the scoop from Casey about his experience filming this series and his expert tips on maximizing your workouts and making this journey as fulfilling as possible. And be sure to check out the iFIT Shop from November 1 - 30 to purchase an exclusive, Bhutan-inspired t-shirt, towel, and performance shirt so you can show off your hard work after completing this series. Items purchased are estimated to ship by December 31, 2023. Read on to learn more, and let’s explore the last Shangri-La together! About Bhutan: The Journey Within Casey Gilbert and Kenton Cool Q&A Bhutan merchandise FAQs Bhutan: The Journey Within About the workouts Bhutan: The Journey Within features 10 hikes with iFIT Guide Kenton Cool, and interval jogs with iFIT Trainer Casey Gilbert, offering a balance of effort and active recovery. About Bhutan Nestled in the heart of the Himalayas, Bhutan whispers tales of ancient monarchs and sacred rituals. Here, lush valleys and snow-capped peaks contrast with ornate monasteries and ancient fortresses. Stepping into Bhutan is like turning the pages of a living history book, where each chapter reveals a culture deeply rooted in Buddhist principles and harmony with nature. Workout highlights Intermediate workouts10 workoutsAverage workout duration: About 30 minutesAvailable on treadmills and ellipticals Casey Gilbert Q&A Casey, Bhutan is renowned for its commitment to Gross National Happiness. How have you incorporated this into your new series? Casey: “Bhutan was an incredibly eye-opening journey for both Kenton and me. We let our guard down and tried to be fully open to experiencing the culture and ethos of Gross National Happiness. He and I have both been focused on our careers and pursuing “success” in a way that sometimes might not prioritize happiness first. But for an entire country to measure success based on happiness first was inspiring! iFIT members will have a firsthand view of how Kenton and I dove into what Bhutan’s philosophies meant to them, and how they impacted us. We designed the journey to be just that, a JOURNEY. It became an emotional and physical trek through one of the most unique places we had ever experienced, and I truly will never forget the experience.” Is there any advice or tips you can give to our iFIT members to make the most of their Bhutanese adventure? Casey: “For this series, it’s all in the HIPS! I would advise our iFIT members to focus on hip mobility and stability before this series or between workouts. We will encounter a lot of climbing, and the elevation adds up. Hip mobility, ankle and foot strength, and endurance will be key. So don’t be afraid to take some time to loosen up before hopping on your machine, and just be happy you’re not doing the series at the elevation we were. Most of Bhutan is at or above 10,000 feet above sea level, and you’ll probably notice that I’m a bit more winded than usual in this series!” Kenton Cool Q&A Kenton, Bhutan's emphasis on Gross National Happiness is unique among national priorities. How did this philosophy influence your work on this series? Kenton: “Gross National Happiness influenced every footstep, movement, and interaction that I and the entire iFIT team had. The Bhutanese people are much more open to collaboration, community, conversation, and sharing what they have, both materialistically and spiritually, with those around them. Whether you are an adventure tourist visiting sites like Tiger’s Nest or, like us, going off the beaten track, interacting with monks, and going up to remote villages, Gross National Happiness is constantly there in a subtle and enveloping manner. We came back as elevated individuals, walking a little bit taller, more grounded, more grateful, and more humble for what we had experienced. I hope this series brings you a sense of serenity and maybe influences you to one day travel to Bhutan, and immerse yourself in this ancient philosophy.” Can you anticipate any transformative insights from this series for iFIT members embarking on this journey through Bhutan with you? Kenton: “[Bhutan: The Journey Within] uniquely combines the Bhutanese Himalayas’ beauty, culture, and spiritual heritage. It’s a departure from the norm, offering a glimpse into a life less focused on the material and more on deeper, often overlooked aspects of existence. It invites reflection on personal purpose and life meaning, sparking questions that viewers will be compelled to explore. This series, blending ancient philosophy and rich landscapes with physical well-being, aims to offer a comprehensive transformation that extends beyond the physical into the spiritual, making it not just a fitness journey but a holistic experience of enrichment. Everyone at home looking for something different, something that will push them both on a physical and a spiritual level, is what makes this series so special.” To learn more, follow Casey, Kenton, and iFIT on Instagram! Workout highlights Beginner + / Intermediate workouts4 workoutsAverage workout duration: Under 25 minutesAvailable on bikes Join Trails to Trees Part 4: California now! Hannah Eden Q&A Hannah, how do you help people find meaning and purpose in their fitness journey through your coaching style? Hannah: “My coaching philosophy is about finding reason and purpose in your fitness journey. Knowing your motivations helps you align your goals with what truly matters to you. I also believe in taking a balanced and sustainable approach. It’s not just about numbers like distance or speed. It’s about being present in the moment, paying attention to how your body feels, and enjoying the process.” Have you faced any challenges on your fitness journey? If so, how did you overcome them? “Definitely! One major hurdle was dealing with an injury that temporarily halted my intense workouts. It was frustrating because I had to take a break from my usual routine, which affected both my physical and mental well-being. To overcome this, I had to adopt a patient and flexible mindset. I focused on finding alternative activities that suited my injury and sought guidance from physical therapists and sports medicine experts. Overall, navigating setbacks in fitness requires patience, adaptability, and seeking support when needed.” How has your fitness journey shaped how you coach and support the iFIT Community? “I’ve faced challenges, hit plateaus, and struggled with motivation, just like many people out there. But those experiences have given me empathy and a deep understanding of what it’s like to be on this fitness rollercoaster. When I coach and support the iFIT Community, I draw upon those personal experiences to connect with others. I know firsthand how important it is to have someone in your corner who understands what you’re going through. I strive to create a supportive and non-judgmental environment where people feel comfortable sharing their struggles and celebrating their victories.” Can you share a memorable moment from your new series? “During filming for Pines to Peaks Part 4: California, we were exploring Sequoia National Park, and let me tell you, it was mind-blowing! Picture this: jogging amidst these massive sequoia trees, feeling like you’ve stepped into a fantasy world. It was straight-up awe-inspiring. And here’s the kicker: all of this is right here in the good ol’ USA! Can you believe it? We have these jaw-dropping national parks in our own backyard. It’s like having a front-row seat to Mother Nature’s greatest hits.” Hannah Eden’s Expert Tips If you want to dive into hiking or biking but feel a little lost on where and how to begin, don’t sweat it! Hannah’s got some awesome tips to help get you started: Don’t be afraid to start with “beginner-friendly” options. “Start with shorter hikes, gentle jogs, or easy bike rides to build up your stamina and confidence. Take it easy and gradually build up your distance and intensity as you get more comfortable.”Treat yourself to some cool gear that makes you feel like a pro. “Invest in comfy shoes, moisture-wicking and stylish clothing. The right gear can make your hiking, jogging, or biking experience way more enjoyable, and you will feel confident doing it!”Embrace the journey. “Whether you’re hiking or biking, let go of any pressure and embrace the fun. Sing out loud, dance it out, or challenge yourself to reach new goals—make it an adventure that brings a smile to your face!” To learn more about Hannah and her journey, follow her and iFIT on Instagram! iFIT Member Highlight: Juan Rivas

Many of us have banked on the promise of “tomorrow” as an excuse to sidestep things that feel daunting or inconvenient. How many can attest to saying, “I’ll work out tomorrow”? At one time or another, we’ve all been there. This was the case for iFIT member Juan Rivas, who struggled to fully commit to his fitness goals in the past. In 2020, he decided it was finally time to trade in those empty promises of “tomorrow” for fulfilled ones of “today.” Over the past year and a half, Juan has gone from “somewhat fit” to a sub-30 5K, with strength gains to boot. Crediting his family as his reason for getting active, Juan now consistently posts about his impressive fitness journey on the Official iFIT Member Facebook Page. Here’s his story! Describe your fitness journey thus far. What ignited those first steps? My kids were the reason why I finally got my act together. In the past, I could only stay somewhat fit for a few months, and I finally got tired of it. This time, I decided that I wanted it to be a permanent change so I could be around for grandchildren. A year and a half ago, I purchased a ProForm bike and haven’t looked back. I cannot believe that now, in my mid-40s, I am the fittest that I’ve ever been in my life. From strength and yoga to bike workouts and outdoor hikes, you’re always crushing it in your posts on the Official iFIT Member Page. What keeps you so motivated? Learning to keep those self-promises. For so long, I let myself down, saying “Tomorrow, tomorrow.” Now, it's all about TODAY and how I can make a better version of myself. It’s those mental victories of completing a workout when I really didn’t want to that propelled me forward. I’ve come to understand that time will pass whether I do the workout or complain about it, so I might as well get it done because I will feel better. They may not be the best workouts, but they are better than no workouts. I keep building on these mental victories and adding notches to my fitness utility belt. What’s one of your favorite PRs this year? I have two. One of them is doing Russian twists for one minute. My core was a weak area of mine, so I’m proud of the progress that I’ve made on it. It’s not just about crunches anymore! My other favorite PR is 13 unbroken pull-ups. You recently ran the Surf City 5K in person. What was that race experience like for you? Two words: Absolutely amazing! Running Live Races on the treadmill with my fellow iFIT family is pretty cool. However, being around other people, feeding off their energy, and working toward a common goal is extraordinary. The icing on the cake was running the race with Nikki Bailey, a fellow iFIT member I had just met. She helped pace me to reach my goal of running it sub-30. The iFIT staff at the expo booth had our iFIT medals ready for us to make things extra special. I walked with a little swagger not only because my calf tightened up during the race, but because I had two medals. It was truly an incredible weekend meeting Sally McRae, participating in the shakeout run at sunset, visiting the iFIT booth, and finishing the race. Who is your favorite iFIT Trainer? It’s a toss-up between John Peel and Briohny Smyth. One helps me crush my workouts, and the other helps me recover. I love the multiple active recovery workout options. What is your favorite iFIT series? My favorite workout series is iFIT Trainer John Peel’s Next-Level Strength Training Series because it took me out of my comfort zone and made me do movements I don’t like. For example, the leg workouts incorporate jumping. Most of those workouts use kettlebells too, which I used to dislike. John does a great job building on each previous workout. Week 12 includes a few AMRAPs that I could not have done during Week 1. It’s pretty cool seeing the progress you make in those 12 weeks. How long have you been an iFIT member? Although I joined in January 2020, it wasn’t until November 2020 that I really started using the app when I purchased my treadmill. Since then, I haven’t looked back. iFIT listened to its customers and made huge improvements in the user interface. They’ve truly stepped up their game big time. What do you like most about iFIT? I will never get bored because there is so much content! I’ve visited many places in the world that I have only dreamt of. On my Hawaii trip this summer, I replicated some of iFIT Trainer Jonnie Gale’s Hawaiian Islands Endurance Series workouts. It was so much fun! In addition, I love the iFIT community. I believe iron sharpens iron. The members encourage and motivate one another. I also love the magnets and medals. It’s so cool that iFIT does this for its members.
